OUR STORY
Whistling Hill was prime pastureland in 1975 before Steve and Nancy Keel purchased the partially wooded property for a family homestead. This house has since been home to three generations and is now taking on its second life as short stay rental and family retreat.
Built in 1976, the front living room, dining room, and kitchen make up the original house. Unique to its time with a mostly open concept, the original dining room and kitchen (which were separated into two rooms in the 1990’s) were reunited during the house’s 2019 renovation. In 1978, the in-law apartment was added to the north side of the house and connects to the main house through the french doors in the living room. ‘Grandma’, as she was lovingly known by both her grandchildren and the community, moved in and called the apartment home for 35 years. While living on the hill, she planted most of the trees and shrubs that you enjoy today. Grandma rooted each of the english boxwoods and transplanted the many heirloom irises that still thrive today. |
In 1994, ‘the addition’, the rear three bed rooms and ‘great room’ were added to the house just in time for the family’s oldest daughter’s wedding and reception.
Whistling Hill is named in honor of the family patriarch, W. Stephen Keel (d. 2012). Steve was an entrepreneur, inventor, and evangelist. While not native to the south or to farm life, Steve contentedly spent his 36 years on the hill whistling as he worked the land, tinkered on inventions, and raised his family. In 2020, five of the family’s seven children took ownership of the home and developed it into the retreat you enjoy today. Whistling Hill continues to be a place of special moments for the Keel family and grandkids. We've also completely remodeled the property and opened the doors for professionals and travelers who seek a private and comfortable place to stay deep in the piedmont of Virginia. Come stay in a place you'll never forget. |
